Blogging, SEO vs. being a bagman

You'd think that if you had Muskoka in your name, you'd either have lived or cottaged there. Not so.
Some marketing genius, and I use the term loosely, has figured out that the word Muskoka garners a lot of web hits, as GTA- Toronto folks tend to visit Muskoka on the weekends. Someone always knows another with a cottage or home here! With the Golden Horseshoe holding 10 million souls, it's not hard! This is the beauty of this place. We can tolerate 100,00 summer guests, and hunker down to winter with 50,000 residents.

And so, here is a website, with a cute young thing apparently reporting 'news' from Muskoka. It is more of a lovely walk down how-can-I-make-a-buck-off-Muskoka lane for her. For the most part she writes research-based info (give the little chickie credit), with little emotional content. She uses stock photos, or rips them off of the web with alacrity. This is *Fair Dealing (Fair Use in the USA) as you are reporting, or quoting another's info. She present the history of Muskoka, for some unnamed reason. It is neither up-to-the-minute reporting, but, perhaps designed to jump on the Huntsville G8 market share bandwagon?

She calls herself a 'sassy bunny in Ontario’s cottage country mecca.' Don't think so. She neither lives here, nor cottages here, according to her own bio. In fact, her family had a resort in the Haliburton Highlands when dinosaurs roamed the earth, but Haliburton—that is not part of Muskoka!

You will see that her 'blog' is connected to various holdings that are managed by someone else. He runs Smojoeblog. He runs Lenzr photo contests ("On 15 photo contest on Lenzr is sponsored by an over 50 magazine and is awarding over 50 lbs of chocolate as a prize..."), and Canada Blog Friends. He pimps out his work to make a buck. He is a bagman, in a new, Information Age kinda way. He is a Freelance Social Relevance Producer. He'll even tell you how to do it. With no ethics. They build 'social relevance'. It is not a natural thing. This means that he and she have nothing to do with Muskoka. At all. They use your web counts, and web page visits to increase their web page hits to market the web sites that make them money. Because it is all about the money.

When I was first contacted to put his Lenzr bit on my sidebar I thought, sure. He gave me a sweet review Jennifer Jilks writes My Muskoka. He has reviewed other Canadian blog friends. He has encouraged me to add my photos to his photo contests, since he was a bit short. He wanted to link to my page, because of my high page rankings, which raise his rankings. Did you know that? It's called SEO.

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the volume or quality of traffic to a web site or a web page (such as a blog) from search engines via "natural" or un-paid ("organic" or "algorithmic") search results as opposed to other forms of search engine marketing (SEM) which may deal with paid inclusion.

He scoured my web pages and found the images that showed me younger, and slimmer! How fake is this?! I am a middle-aged, experienced, wrinkled grandmother. I love Muskoka and I honour it. I loathe being used! Ya gotta teach 'em how to treat ya - to quote Dr. Phil! Enough.

Now that I think about it, I am really upset. He asked me if I wanted to pretend to be Muskoka Girl.ca. I declined. I am not a girl. I am an educated, serious, committed member of the Muskoka Region. I will not pimp myself out to market someone else's webwork. This is not work, this is play, for money. Oh, no. That is pimping yourself out for money. You post some 'articles' and I'll pay you to do it. You use the word Muskoka, and we'll increase our web presence. What a scam. How, in all good conscience, could I convince myself that pretending to be a 'Muskoka Girl', could I live with myself? It may not be unethical but it is surely immoral.

And 'sassy' little Muskoka Girl, whomever she is, if she is, indeed, who he says she is (journalism student, living in London, ON), is prostituting herself to be on the web. It used to be that journalists were subjected to some scrutiny. They had editors and bosses who watched what they did. We all know who owned them, and why their biases existed in the first place. We could read a newspaper understanding their leanings. Their job did not include 250 word blog posts. There was content, and real experiences. Issues that mattered. News, fer gawd's sake. A blog is an informal, fun, experiential personal review of events. It is not a piece for a newspaper. You may be marketing your work, your resort, or your art, or professional expertise, but you state this clearly. Readers understand this.

My friend, Barrie Summy, published U.S.— teen's author, celebrates this. She runs a Book Review club to increase her web presence. This is honest. Up front. It is fun.

Nancy runs a resort, but honours the spirit of nature and wildlife in her blog. She teaches about respect for the wildlife in her region.

Beware what you read on the Internet. Check the credentials of the work you see. I am ashamed that I bought into this scam. I was paid $12.50 to put Lenzr in my sidebar for a month.  In the US you must indicate if you are paid for such writings, or promotions. A shame that this does not exist in Canada, too.

Goodgrief Jen! What an awful thing. Sorry you got caught up but easy to see how it happened. I learn something new everyday -=not always something I wish I knew . We have a ways to go with learning to manage all this relatively new technology.

Hello Jenn Jilks,
Rob Campbell here, Smojoe. The author of Canada Blog Friends and the owner of Lenzr. Jenn I think we've had a terrible misunderstanding.

First, Muskoka girl is not my creation, but in fact the work of a friend (of a friend). She does have a cottage in those parts, but doesn’t get there often enough to be considered a true muskoka girl, I agree. But in realty she's just a dear sweet young person who wouldn’t dream of ever doing anything wrong or posing as something shes not – she just a kid starting out blogging and using a name I thought was cool.

As for your Canada Blog Friends profile I think its still very relevant, and yes I am a relevance producer.

Because its as you say,
“I am tired, too, of being asked to be a 'fan' of someone who simply wants to use my readership, or my name, or my page rank on My Muskoka to increase theirs. The porn ads, and the others (member enlargement, etc.) are just disgusting! I do not mind helping flog a project, an event, a good company, or where to buy a good cuppa joe. If you are driving 35 km to the next Muskoka town, you want this info! “
You have summed up what it is to be relevant, and I think your blog is an excellent distribution channel for those messages that really matter. And I would not dream of ever asking you to compromise your values. Nor would I ever ask you to post on something unrelated to Muskoka for any amount of money – but if I do ask you to post a message for me, I will pay you. It seems only fair. And if that makes me a bad guy well then so be it – I pay bloggers because they deserve it and their perspective is ever bit as legitimate as major news media - which is increasingly sponsored btw

Finally the Lenzr widget. Yes I know it didnt work on your website, and I'm sorry for that. Truth is that it doesn’t work or look good or last very long on many bloggers' websites it seems, except my own. Lenzr is just a tool remember and we are just trying it out. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.

Thanks. If you or anyone has more questions just email me, thanks.

Hi Jenn, I have had my own little run in with the infamous "Muskoka Girl"

- She/He likes to steal pictures from websites including mine. I do not want to provide the link for obvious reasons. I don't mind people using them for non-commercial use as long as they will provide an acknowledgment or link.

Anyhow, probably 50% of Bloggers or websites are looking for a profit through Adsense campaigns and affiliate programs etc. I don't have any problems with it as long as you don't steal and misrepresent yourself

@Sallie We do need to be warned.

@Robert That is not what you told me on the phone about MuskokaGirl. Perhaps I misunderstood? That said, she is using other's photos.

@ Ed Actually, Ed, I never found that the ads made me any money! About 18 cents one December and I dumped them as I thought they detracted from my page.

I don't think anyone should use another's photos without asking, first. I have great difficulty with this. Many marekt their professional photos through blogs.
If you use Copyscape.com, you can see where many take local content and put it on their own page to increase their hits.

Jenn,

Just so you know, I'm very upset with what you wrote about me. Its such a sinister depiction. It took me hours to research you and write that CBF profile post on you, and I sure haven't made anything close to my hourly rate on the adsense code I have in the sidebar there. I think you need to give some thought about your intended victims before you post. You are the one spreading lies here, and its at my expense. I'm not a recreational blogger per say, I run a business - that's focused on making money.

I will speak to Muskoka Girl about using other people's pictures and not giving links, but there is no affiliate marketing on her site that I am aware of? not even adsense, so I dont think she's out to profit off your pictures.

and as for you warning Sallie... Goodgrief, thank god we have your blogspot to spread the word Jenn. Thank goodness we can count on you to get it right.

@ Rob, you haven't explained why you were flogging muskoka girl's site, then suddenly someone else is its figurehead is as apparently running it. It is creepy and weird. You clearly offered me the job. As I said, blogging for fun should be different than blogging for profit. And it should be clearly stated.
I want my readers to question the motivation of what they read. I have blogged since 2005, with students. Critical thinking skills are crucial in this age. Too many are scammed, with identify theft, and mortgage fraud, being two things that irk me. Another scam up here, people phoning seniors telling them their grandkids are in jail and demanding bail money.
I don't know if I have it right, but I do know what I see and read. And, like people yelling into cell phones in a restaurant, I want users of modern technology to think about what they are doing and why. New technology requires new ethical principles.

With many seniors in Muskoka's population (15%) we are a vulnerable group, especially if we do not understand the ways in which we may be preyed upon. Those who survive by using their talents, should have their property protected. The other vulnerable part of our population are the artisans who are subject to the vagaries of the climate and the tourists.

If Muskoka girl is a journalism student, as I thought I read before she blocked me on FB, then her lack of education about 'blogging' is appalling. I hope you give her the heads up as she wasn't listening to me.

I still don't know by what right she can call herself Muskoka girl, and your logos and links being associated with hers isn't good for your 'relevance production', with references to your Smo & CBF site. My Muskoka friends are not amused. I am not sure how posts about old things like the posts she has written about Muskoka have relevance. She neither lives it nor takes her own photos, or writes anything meaningful in an emotional way.

People of my generation learned to use computers in the work place when they first arrived on the scene. Now, the activities are blurry, as well as the morals, ethics and values.
I appreciate the great write-up on CBF, I know you worked hard at it, but I don't need to advertise for fans, as those who love Muskoka like to see what is going on and read my blog for fun. This is why I differentiate Muskoka from my opinions. These are simply my opinions and don't read them if you think its crap.

Most of us are creeped out by the Facebook breaches of privacy, most of us do not undertand, and this is an issue of which bloggers need to be aware. It comes down to Internet Safety and wise use of the new technology.

This is a great article regarding doing comparison between the human being and SEO.

Are their two Muskoka Girls? Because I assure you I never blocked you from Facebook,I do not live in Hamilton and I have been to Muskoka a billion times. You have a freedom of speech when writing in your own blog, but I would really like to know where you are getting your facts from? Really the only thing I have done wrong here is used other people's pictures.

@Michelle Everyone wants to buy into the Muskoka name these days. It's a shame you cannot use your own photos on your blog. It is intellectual property, and one is supposed to blog about things they know, do and experience. The best part of my blog friend's posts are the ones that feature their feelings and emotions.

And, in fact, I think there are two people using the muskokagirl tag. The other has disappeared off FB, but not twitter!
