The Monarchy in Canada

This is the question for many of her colonies, and one which the recent visit, and attendance of theirs at our National Ottawa Remembrance Day ceremony, calls into question.

It seems to me that politicians are the ones to remove the Queen, and the head of state in Canada, the Governor General, Michaelle Jean. And it seems to me to be a lose-lose situation.

CBC's Cross Country Check-up did a show on this topic.
November 15, 2009
"Is it time to retire the monarchy in Canada?"
The future king Prince Charles and his wife Camilla the Duchess of Cornwall just finished an eleven-day tour of Canada ...and the reception was low-key and polite but certainly more reserved than previous visits. One has but to think back to the visit of Charles and Diana in the 80's and remember the great crowds and unrelenting coverage of that trip. Or even earlier ones, when the Queen herself visited here.

Methinks that young people have less in common with these uncommoners. My grandparents were from the UK, at least the family that adopted me. But our children have fewer contacts. We plan visiting sometime, but more in terms of history.

The only insightful point I heard on the show, what that treaties with Native Peoples were made between the 'crown' and Six Nations. I wonder what the future holds? So, apparently, does Prince Charles. This speech, an excellent examination of the environment. He's not just another pretty face!

It's an interesting situation. It seems to me life becomes more and more insular with the Net and other electronic gadgets. So little pulls us together anymore.
