Even the frost is quaking now: a cryoseism!

A cryoseism, also known as a frost quake, may be caused by a sudden cracking action in frozen soil or rock saturated with water or ice. As water seeps down into the rock, it freezes and expands, putting stress on surrounding rock. This builds up until it is relieved explosively in a cryoseism.

There was one on Christmas Day.

  From Peterborough, Napanee and as far east as Montreal, Twitter and Facebook were alive with accounts of multiple incidents.

  The melting action over the last few days has caused water to seep into the rocks and as it freezes and expands, it puts stress on surrounding rock. This builds up until it is relieved explosively in a cryoseism.
