Ontario Politics and Signage

The campaign is ramping up.
Today (September 7th, 2011) the writ is dropped and the election officially declared. Issue of the Writ.

There are rules around placement of signs.

2011 Federal Election Signs
The Municipal Elections Act, 1996 does not address where campaign signs may be located. The regulation of signs generally falls within the jurisdiction of the local or upper-tier municipality or, when signs are placed near a provincial highway, the Ministry of Transportation. Candidates should check with the municipal clerk to determine any sign by-law requirements.

Ottawa by-laws state that signs cannot be placed on boulevards. It is as distracting as the roadside memorials

Well the twitterverse is heating up. All heckling is breaking loose. I keep wondering What Would Jack Layton Think? (WWJLT)

Gotta love signs!

Complaints about Lawn Signs
Do not forward complaints about the placement of campaign signs to Elections Ontario, as they have no jurisdiction over them. If public property is affected, direct all calls to the respective government office. Alternatively, if signs are close to a provincial highway, the issue may fall under the Ministry of Transportation’s jurisdiction. You
drive-thro' signage!
Elections Ontario
should also contact your municipality for information on local by-laws.
