Deer in the snow

Twas a mystery. Why did the deer have snow all over their faces in our yard? It hadn't been snowing, although a lovely snowfall meant the exercising of muscles on our long driveway. I think we had about 20 cm (8") or so, on the weekend. The deer do smack downs, smashing their hooves across the frozen lawn to expose the green grass. The turkeys were doing the same thing, scratching away.
There were food fights all over the lawn, as deer kept their pecking order. Their smack-downs are wicked. I'm glad I'm not on the bottom end of the hooves.

I remember seeing reindeer on the Mackenzie delta towards spring when all you could see was a rear end sticking up out of the snow. They were going down to get lichen and by March the snow on the level would be 80-120 cm deep because the snow came in the fall and never thawed until spring. Something is learned each day by watching deer.
