OPP chased a perp for 154 km!

The news can be the highlight of my days, some days! Ontario is pretty snowy. Ontario is also slippery. Apparently, so is an alleged perp!
This is really fascinating. This guy was a bad un'. They haven't named him, as this was precipitated by a domestic incident, and he's charged with criminal harassment, driving under suspension, possession of drugs (heroin, cocaine, MDMA) for trafficking. He's a 47-year-old who ought to know better!

This is the screen capture from the helicopter surveillance.

A man, 47, was arrested on Jan. 27 following the longest helicopter chase in Ontario history, Durham police say.

CBC reported that the chase began around 2:30 a.m. on Jan. 27, and ended 90 minutes later. Eventually, they narrowed down his travel path with police tire spikes. The guy got out of the car, ran into the woods, where the police followed. The helicopter pilot told them to ease off, as the perp was surrounded and had to come out onto a road. I bet that was a relief!

What a process. They kept following him, they were able to call off vehicle pursuits, which can be dangerous, as they tracked him from the air! So cool! Peterborough has lots of lakes, as you can see from the satellite.
Oshawa, Peterborough, finally, Port Hope
You can hear, in the video narration by the pilot (below), the perps speeds were up to 230 km/hr. on highway #401. We've been watching Heavy Rescue 401, which shows some of the incidents on our highways across southern Ontario. It can be deadly. It's a busy, busy road.

What a great demonstration of technology, cooperation, training, and skills by our OPP! If you don't or can't watch the video, you can see how clearly the radar tracks the heat from his car, and then his body. They can tell how fast he is travelling (up to 230 km/hr).

OPP Incident Reports

It's good seeing our police out doing their jobs. They provided a report for April 3 - 10, explaining
Our turkeys are huge!
their 331 calls. It's hard to imagine!

Deer are on the move to summer yards
There were impaired drivers; 21 collisions with 12 involving deer, and another involving one turkey; 12 domestic violence calls; property disputes; domestic assaults; people driving on unnavigable flooded roads. It reminds me that we live a pretty peaceful life.

We encountered several OPP cars, sirens blazing, on Perth Rd., Concession 2A. I was curious as to what happened. I think this was the incident:
On Friday, April 7, officers responded to a call in Drummond North Elmsley Township. A 27-year-old Ottawa man remains in custody pending a bail hearing, and is charged with two counts of assault, one count of break and enter into a dwelling and one count of mischief.

They just kept coming. By the end of it, there were something like 6 OPP black & whites, and an unmarked police car. They got their man!

Long weekend traffic

UPDATE: (ORILLIA, ON) – OPP is reporting 12 road fatalities, one marine fatality and one off-road vehicle death over the long weekend, marking the deadliest Labour Day Long Weekend in OPP-patrolled jurisdictions in 20 years. Since 2009, OPP officers have investigated more than 600 road deaths that involved an inattentive driver.

3:00 a.m. in Toronto
As of mid-August, the OPP has investigated 38 road deaths in which an inattentive driver was involved, compared to 19 deaths involving an impaired driver. I hope people are driving safely. Well see how many incidents there are on the roads this weekend. We are glad it's the shoulder season, as the summer traffic slows down, and it is easier to navigate in town.  There are some who could use a driving refresher course. Others who simply need to respect the other drivers. Perth Fair is on, so we shop in Smiths Falls to avoid crazy drivers.

Poor Grampa is off to deliver Meals on Wheels this morning. I hope all goes well. We have the kids visiting and we are watching educational videos safe at home.
The OPP usually provide a summary at the end of the weekend. We shall see. These are the incidents I spotted. I hope you made it home safe.

We came across this scene on our way to the Sundance Festival. (More on that in another post!)

Rideau Ferry Rd. Incident from Jennifer Jilks on Vimeo.
We passed a bit of a mess on Rideau Ferry Rd. No one was hurt, they told me. A truck and trailer must have fish-tailed.

There were other incidents of people doing stupid things. We approached the red light. Waited.
The advanced green ran its course. Several trucks hauling trailers. Then we got our green. The same distracted driver in front of us.
The car two in front turns left, and the truck and trailer thought he'd cross the intersection and turn left while that was happening. Then, a pedestrian is crossing, they block the entire intersection.
What are these people thinking?

The drivers were distracted, weaving, talking to passengers. They didn't know where they were going. Trucks and trailers blocking traffic.

Saturday, at the Highway #43 intersection...it shows how much we need a ring road around the town. He came within inches.
There was a car parked on the street and he was hard-pressed to turn.

This is why Perth needs a ring road. This is a horrible corner.

Festival of the Maples 2016

April 30th Festival featuring all things maple! It was a banner year for sap, they tell us. Our local producers, Oliver's Mapleworks, say they filled their vat three times on three different days (~2300 gallons), and had to quit, as they were worn out! This only happens once a season, in a good year! Tressa was interviewed on Lake 88 to celebrate the festival. They have some fun competitions, which help with the cause and educating new producers.

Quite a variety of booths, and lots to sample, buy or eat on the spot.

Hubby took a wrap with him, and they put the sausage in it for him. He can't have dairy, yeast or eggs and it's tricky to eat out some days. He wore his big sunglasses to protect his bruised eye, which is healing, thanks to all who commented!

Lots of groups out fundraising, as well as celebrating their ventures. Algonquin College has a great heritage masonry program!

I quite liked this swing seat! The taffy fun. The stuffed Dalmatian is amazing!

Smiths Falls Gordon Pipe Band, though it was hard to get a photo as everyone was in front trying to snap a shot! It's quite a lineup of events. We arrived early, 9:30, to get parking and avoid some of the crowds.

They always have the car show on Wilson St.

Our neighbour, David Oliver setting up! He's a hard working man, as well as his wife (who volunteers non-stop in town), his cousins who help them run Oliver's Mapleworks.

So, this is a hoot. I was trying to take a photo of the crowds. (See the first photo.) I looked up at the man beside me, about 6'5", I think!
I said, "It's easy for you!"
He said, "Here, give me your camera!" (His photo is the second one. I held his camera while he held mine!)
I had hubby take a photo of us, I'm 5'4"!

They were providing tours of the Studio Theatre, which runs a great season. Volunteers were dressed is snazzy hats for the promo!

The usual petting zoo

This guy sure was prepared with both camera and videocam on a tripod. I think he was just a tourist!

The OPP were there, and the kids could try the siren!

And, of course, the Tay at Stewart Park. The map, published by Lake 88, shows the streets that were closed for the event. So nice walking and not worrying about traffic!
