NaPoWriMo Day 16 ♪♫ music soothes the soul

Rise Up, My Love
Yes, you are loved
Hold onto that
Rise up and face your grief
Near and far
Comforting hands reach out
From this world and the next

Having been unable to follow the 'rules' of a NaPoWriMo prompt club, I used this video as my prompt... Music heals. My late father sang at the top of his lunch whilst in long-term care. You could hear him down the hall and in the nurse's office! Everyone loved his fine tenor voice. I realized he was singing to assuage the emotional and physical pain.

With his brain tumour it got to the point that he couldn't remember the words. (The tumour was in Broca's Area, this is where we produce language.) Eventually, not only could he not manage expressive language, he couldn't manage receptive language.
"Do you want a pill for pain?"
"A pie for pay?"

I printed out his favourite hymn words for him. Eventually, he lost his glasses. They his hearing aids. (Yes, both of them!) I began to sing for him but this only made him angry as he couldn't remember the words, nor hear me well. It was a failure, on his part. He told me it was all cloudy. It was all mixed up in his head. His dementia agitated him.
He could not articulate his pain, and staff required him to state that he was in pain before they would request that the long-term care doctor increase his meds.
It was a period of torture for me. He wouldn't respond to the Charge Nurse. The doctor was unreachable, as neither his office nor clinic would take a message. Finally, after three months of my suspecting he was in pain, then three days of calling his offices, they manage a prescription of morphine.
Afterwords, I reported him.

Spring brings an awakening of the earth and our spirits soar with the uplifted singing and winging of the wildlife. These are my photos of the creatures that inhabit our Muskoka. The healing power of nature soothes the soul. Music: Rise Up, My Love; Mathew Larkin, Noel Edison, and the Elora Festival Singers. In The Heavenly Kingdom, Anthems & Motets.

NaPoWriMo 2013 pseudoku

black clouds of sorrow
hunkered down under trees
tom keeps watch in the rain

freezing rain
coats weeping branches
limbs that will bend or break

They are called pseudoku as we white folks have issues writing true Haiku!

We tend to murder it like desperate crows seeking shiny jewels! The prize often escapes us.

We often miss the twist at the end. (Read more here!)
Syllabification doesn't translate well into English.

NaPoWriMo Day #12 with photos

In this, NaPoWriMo month 2013, the weather, it is poetic. Our spring storm is awful, as they warned us.

Phoebe complains in my window

frozen rain falls
cacophonous clacking punctuates the air
birds flutter about seeking sustenance
nuthatch on frozen feeder bleeding with ice
wild turkey scratches in the hail
nestmaking continues as it must
forward one step at a time

promises of spring
as the universe unfolds as it should

orange-red rhubarb seeks the sun
bravely facing cold spring air
as I must face the future
with dignity
snow falls and blankets their fragile faces
phoebe peers in the window
questioning me
what's up with this?

Daisy & I went for a forest walk.
We know that April storms are often the norm. It's been interesting to watch, photograph and document spring's arrival.

turkey scratches
A few steps forward, a few steps back. There is little greenery, other than the majestic pines and thirsty cedar, but this will make us appreciate the colours of spring.

I have been suffering with arthritis in my hands. It began in my baby fingers. I would get irritable and wouldn't know why. This is true for many of my hospice clients. They refuse pain meds, and get agitated and grumpy. We know that exercise is important for this disease and I should bash away on the piano but haven't had the heart to do so yet. I continue to tap on my computer doing some research.

Facebook friends have experience with this disease and have recommended some over-the-counter relief. I saw the doctor a year ago, but they aren't trained in helping with this stage of the disease. He was no help at all.
I cannot complain, as I have many friends and clients with far more advance arthritis.
I see what the future holds and must enjoy my mobility now, today. Carpe Diem.

Hubby has been a brick, fetching MSM. I am happy to hunker down on this miserable day and enjoy my blog buddies and my critters.
Oprah was in Ottawa the other day. I love her notion of the gratitude journal.

I am grateful for nature, critters, lunches out, hubby, Facebook friends, and Advil!

NaPoWriMo Day 5 A cinquain

For NaPoWriMo Day 5
They suggest a cinquain. The rules are below.

petals
angelic, white
peering, poking, prodding
 lacey, silky, milky, nodding
bract

springing
hopeful, healing
hailing, raining, snowing
sighing, anxious, cold front flying
shoot

Framework for Cinquain

Line 1 - one word for the topic - noun
Line 2 - 2 words to describes your topic -adjective
(from Latinad - 'toward', + jacere - 'throw')
Line 3 - 3 words that describes the actions relating to your topic -adverb
(place, time, circumstance, manner, cause, degree)
Line 4 - 4 words that describes the feelings relating to your topic - affect
Line 5 - one word that is another noun for your topic - synonym

Syllables

Line 1 - two syllables
Line 2 - four syllables
Line 3 - six syllables
Line 4 - eight syllables
Line 5 - two syllables
I used this poetic strategy to teach my gr. 8 writers about grammatical terms. It works well! The Handbook of Poetic Forms suggests:
  • Refrain from being cloyingly sweet
  • build toward a climax
  • put a surprise into your last two lines
  • be concerned with thoughts and images rather than parts of speech.

NaPoWriMo Day #4

Jaundiced Outlook
technology darkens my world
filth oozes through cyberspace
they fail to make eye contact
focusing instead on their ignorant phones

self-important people
with self-important devices
addiction to immediate communication
140 characters-worth of hate

I combined two prompts. The NaPoWriMo prompt was to take a spaceship name from Scottish science fiction writer Iain M. Banks' books. The video prompt at Imaginary Garden with Real Toads was rather sad. A vulgar thing, with Justin Timberlake lip-synching, and nurses that belong on porn movies.
And this post, by a blogger:

All right I will cut right to the chase. In the past I have done several posts on the obnoxious forwarding of material best suited for the garbage can. This was often of a political, historical, racist and stereotypical nature.

NaPoWriMo Day #3

This is from a writing prompt at imaginary garden with real toads...

the imaginary garden with real toads
failed again
how could I have done that?
repeating mistakes once again

searching for a purpose
neglecting my chores
negating my small mercies

angst bleeds from my pores
winds smash my face
winter is back breeding my discontent

I tried and I failed

Existentialism

  • individual experience
  • sense of isolation
  • indifferent environment
  • responsibility for choices made
