Murphys Point Park Snake Talk

My kids were camping at the park this week. After we packed up, and returned our gear, we had an ice cream. At 2 p.m., at the Visitor Centre, Alida was doing a snake talk.
Our nameless 20 or 30-something-yr. old snake

For those who fear snakes, this is an easy way to get to know them. I first met snakes at the cottage. Everyone used to kill Water Snakes on sight, never mind the rattle snakes, because in the 60s we didn't understand the cycle of life.
Next snake I met was Nigini, my grade 8 science teacher had a Boa Constrictor in our classroom. In my classrooms, I did much in the way of educating students about biodiversity, species at risk, and the important of the cycle of life.

While Alida talked, she let snakie put himself on the tree.

These snakes have flat bellies, to allow them to grab with their bellies onto the bark. Their skin is silkie-smooth, and warm to the touch.

Yes, these snakes go up into the trees, but you need not fear them falling, they are up there very securely!
2017

You'll find them on the edge of a forest, they tell me. Where they can sun themselves, and find places to rub up against to shed their skins. Although, my cat spotted one in the leaves on the ground. I convinced him to find something else to play with!

We spotted a Ratsnake on the road last month. It rattled its tale, just like rattlers, an interesting defense mechanism as it mimics Rattlesnakes when it ruffles the leaves!

The park has Water Snakes, as well as Garter Snakes. The Ratsnake is the most docile. The park continues to chip and monitor snakes, as this species is at-risk for extirpation.

Sliding scale of species who are in danger of extinction:
  1. Species at risk -
  2. Special concern -
  3. Threatened -
  4. Endangered -
  5. Extirpated - gone in a particular region or ecosystem.
  6. Extinct - gone forever.
Jofee (4 yrs.) led the parade.

Camping 101 - campsite & cooking tour

Camping 101 continues. Here is the scene for breakfast: pancake mix and bacon for brekkie.
The campsite, waterside, Caitlin makes breakfast.

Here is a wee chipmunk.

Breakfast under the tarp.

Raccoons liked the soy milk

Remember, whilst camping, that you are encroaching on animal territory. They live here all year, while you only visit. Store your food in containers.

Raccoon tracks on the beach blanket

Water filtration -
remember to bring it into the tent
at night!

Yummy pancakes, cooked in bacon grease!
The raccoons were terrible. They drank Jean-Luc's beer, puncturing the cans with their sharp little teeth, got silly and ate into the Soy Milk boxes, then punctured a hole in the water filtration bag.

Josephine, having been taught the finer points of videography, gave Sir John a tour of her island campsite. While I miss integrating curriculum and technology (My M.Ed. topic), I am happy to channel my energies into playing/working with the grandkids!

Jofee, 4-years-old, is learning to make videos. Here is a tour of her campsite.

BTW
I have found some YouTube videos, by blackraven1515, on preparing camp foods. She has lots of great ideas for the novice camper.

Camping 101 - beach time

Nothing better than free play with water and sand!
No wonder JK and K teachers put them in classrooms!

Ta Da!
Delicate process!

This is the delight of Murphys Point Park beaches. Eventually, after the moat, they made a castle.

Camping 101 - Sir John goes to Murphys Point Park Beach

First the car ride
Sir John gets around. He's been here and there. Today he went to Murphys Point Park. I rented a canoe at Murphys Point Park, surprised the kids. They have been camping for the week on an island.
Here are my blog posts:
Packing, unpacking, filtering watersetting up the tent, cooking lunch, beach time!

I've learned so much about camping, never having been. We cottaged July and August in Muskoka every year.

Next the canoe ride.
Like learning a new computer, it helps to have a pro or mentor there to give you pointers. Many of our Ontario parks have Learn To Camp programs. Two-day events to teach you the basics.

It was a delightful trip on Rideau Lake.
I interupted breakfast. That was OK. Caitlin and Isabelle shared some bacon with me!

Early morning, fisherman in the background.
We washed the dishes, examined the damage from the raccoons. (Two beer cans punctured- they loved them and put punctures in the water filtration bag. Note to self: put everything fragile in the tent!)

Everyone was going to the beach.
First up: get dressed, brush teeth, pack up lunch, assemble in the canoes.

We surprised Jofee at her campsite.

Water and sand play - nothing better

Isabelle is so happy she did a headstand or 'Downward Dog', happy as a clam!
Mother/daughter moments

While we prepare for beach time,
the girls play by the water.
Caitlin took these photos with my camera.

All done for the day.
Push harder, Isabelle!
Bug watching
I took Sir John home, but first we popped into the Visitor's Centre.
Au revoir!
After his big trip,
he checked out the Mica Display at the park

Camping 101 - cooking lunch

Job #1 - light the stove
Packing, unpackingfiltering watersetting up the tent, now lunch!
Water has boiled, add pasta

Caitlin dehydrated broccoli, tomatoes,
and other veggies, which she added.

Yum!

Stir frequently!

Isabelle is first up

Blow, because it is hot!

Camping 101 - the tent

First is location. Then finding the gear.
This is a location they used before.
Murphys Point Park, on an island. Canoe in, canoe out!

Josie asked why I wasn't staying. I told her I didn't have my jammies!

I watched the girls while this process was going on.
Never camped. Probably never will!
Packing, unpackingfiltering watersetting up the tentlunch!
Amazing design. Just slide the doo-hickeys in!

First you get it up

Then you take a break!

Pretending to sleep,
Isabelle was under the blanket.
