Book Review: The Adventures of Bubba Jones

Bubba
By Jeff Alt
This is a cute tale. I offered it to my 8-year-old granddaughter, but she really wasn't interested. I tried twice. She'd been to the Adirondacks, but it might have been the cover. It's hard to say!

We'd visited the US, in the fall, the Tupper Lake trip. The scenery is amazing!

I began reading it, and it is an good, educational tale. It has some mystery and magic, which she likes, but still no sale.

It is a cleaver weaving of information: history, science, geography, mystery and time travel. Shenandoah National Park has several important geological features, such as the Talus mountain slopes, whereby rock erodes and piles at at the bottom of a gully.

Kids can learn about dinosaurs who roamed the area, or U.S. Presidents who visited the site. Also, Alt weaves into his time travel stories of the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC), created by Franklin D.  Roosevelt, who wanted to give employment to unemployed young men during The Great Depression. It operated from 1933 to 1942.

The CCC built visitor facilities throughout the park.Sadly, the park (established in December, 1935), was initially racially segregated.  The park was completed by the beginning of WW II and the mountains were allowed to be natural. There were 450 mountain residents on Blue Ridge Mountains, who were relocated in order to create the park.

#6 Tupper Lake Trip; home again

Paul Bunyan!
Home again.
It was a whirlwind tour of the Adirondacks, #1 Tupper Lake Trip, specifically Tupper Lake. It was quite the distance. I think the trees had turned quite a bit compared to Saturday!

I love the atmosphere, the loggers and unique homes.

The signage is interesting, as we have similar signs in Ontario. We spotted several lawn signs, as well as the ubiquitous election signs, saying, "Justice for Garrett." I searched a bit and found out that this 12-year-old young boy who was murdered in 2011. A man was arrested, and they had a mistrial. Some say he was falsely accused. Some say the accused was targeted because he is black.

Old theatre!

I was intrigued with the signs for wheelchairs. I'm not quite sure what they indicate!

Passports ready, we found the bridge back to Canada. At this point, we switched and I drove us across. Hubby's back was getting to the point where he had to stop driving. I noticed that we still had cat paw prints on the hood!

JB took the photos as we drove across. He's getting good at photography!
