miniFred smells the roses

I am rethinking putting the goldfish outside. We haven't had much rain, until this week. I use the water barrels and eaves overflow water to fill it up. If we are getting a drought, again, hmmmm, must mull it over.

Out filling the water fountain, I found a teeny toad hopping in the plantain.

I do like toads!

Our lawn is covered in this plant. It is called ribwort plantain. The lawn is covered in it. I hesitate to mow it. The miniFreds like it.

There were two kits out eating. The first

Then I spotted four kits on the deck, all at the same time. My only conclusion is that the groundhog taken was our Momma Fred. They don't last long in the wild. She's done well. Yesterday's post showed the video where she is whistle-warning the kits that danger was near.

  1. I feel so sad that the kits don't have their mama anymore. I'm guessing they are old enough now they can survive, but what will they do without her cautionary whistle?

  2. Nice ID on the plantain, we have gobs of it in our yard too. I've had my step daughter's husband complain that I let it grow in the yard along with all the other green stuff.
Pffft. It doesn't bother me a bit.
I refuse to spray 'weed' killer on the yard, that is just insane.

  3. Not Fred! I feel really bad even if that is the way of nature.
    I've always loved toads too.

Oooh... or perhaps Mini-Fred One? Re the plantain, the bud can be used as a substitute for mushroom, or to enhance any foraged mushrooms. The leaves can be collected at any time for medicinal use, the flower ‘buds’, if being used to make a mushroom stock, need to be collected after they have turned brown but before they get really dry. Re the medicinal, the leaves can be used raw or 'concocted' in various ways: antibacterial, antihistamine, antifungal, analgesic... YAM xx

  7. Oh...I'm so hoping that mama is not gone. Hopefully she has just gone exploring. The little pups are so adorable and they look so very healthy. The daffodils are looking so petty. It is Hot again here today.

  8. After seeing so many photos and videos of Mama Fred, it does make me sad that she's likely to have been coyote food. It may be the cycle of life, but I get interested and somewhat attached to an animal which gets named.
