Mourning Cloak caterpillar

Mourning Cloak
Nymphalis antiopa

I was weeding and found this pokey thing in the garden. I had it ID'd by BAMONA, I'm so bad with that!

This is the adult! They over winter, which is why they can look so frowsy, and are often the first butterflies we see in the springtime.

  2. I've seen a number of them in their caterpillar form.

  3. I have a mourning cloak post in the queue for later. Our butterflies came out early and have now gone into hiding again. My research says they will come back out again in fall to feed. I'll be watching to see if that's true or not. Haven't seen any caterpillars though. - Margy
