Pond Study

April 28 – grass fires, as well as rain warnings? It just petered out. Lots of tornadoes on the other side of the border. We had about 2 mm.

In the frog pond a wood frog has laid these eggs. I took photos, as I'll watch as they grow and hatch into tadpoles!

This was an accidental photo, in that I was trying to get a photo of the Wood Frog eggs in the foreground, and ended up with this.

There are billions of mosquito larvae in the pond. BILLIONS! It seems as if it'll be a banner year. I can see water striders, faery shrimp, toe biters, as well as other wee things.

Happily, the toe biter was madly eating the mosquito larvae! You go!

  2. Crazy world. We cheer bugs that eat bugs that want to eat us.

  3. This is really neat how you've been capturing the beginning of life in these little things. Lots of RAIN down here in Texas...more than we need.

  5. Your accidental photo is really nice! Ugh on the mosquitos, I hope those toe biters get fat from all their chowing down on larvae.

  6. I love that you can spot these tiny creatures and name them off. I wouldn't have a clue.

  8. The frogs all around my yard will soon start croaking and be crazy loud, but when I walk near they stop, and no matter how long I linger to look, I never ever see one in or near the water! It must just be me. Maybe I don't stay still long enough. -Kate
