Saturday's Critters

Welcome to the weekend! I must admit that I slept in. Just preparing for daylight savings. Spring is early, and the birds are singing. I worry for our critters, as the bears will be up early, too. The sap is flowing, and syrup makers are on their second boil.

March Break begins here in Ontario. Great excitement. The kids have plans! I shall continue to try to trap this visitor cat, but it isn't going well. He's been sighted a distance of 7 km apart, seeking food. Now that the snow is gone he'll be less likely to appear here.

Trapping event #3 I set it all up. Camera trap waiting...

A piece of food was moved, but nothing on the camera! The raccoons are out, and I dread capturing them.

We had warm temperatures. The ticks are active at 5℃. Otherwise, they sleep under the snow.

The coyotes are on the prowl:

The coyotes chase the deer, but one cannot take down a single deer unless it is wounded.

That said, look at the speed of this pair of coyotes!

The fisher went by, March 3rd.

  2. As much as we look forward to spring, we do not look forward to tick season! It is also time for you to get out in the woods hunting the antlers the deer shed recently! I think I shall do that tomorrow!

  3. I finally looked up Martens and Fishers...because I know I wouldn't know the difference if I sighted one. They are similar but different! Loved seeing the bounding deer. It probably doesn't get much chance to do that in the woods.

  5. The fisher looks a most interesting animal, we don't get them over here in the UK so it was lovely to see one on your video.

  9. I think the coyote had been chasing the deer way too long cuz he's starting to act and run like one. The fisher just seems like a giant ground hog and I don't think I'd like to meet one up close. Linda in Kansas

  11. Lots happening in the woods these days. And the crazy weather has everyone confused. I'm hoping that things will settle down a little soon.
We sprang forward last night - not my favourite time of year!
