The trees sure have grown.

We've two big Catalpas out front. This one is doing well. The leaves are huge. The buds and flowers are wonderful.
The other tree didn't start well or end well that year. My theory is that the sun bouncing off of the house heated the tree and killed off the cambium layer.
Dead branches little the sidewalk.
We managed to trim the second last branch of the catalpa tree during Week 37 of Gramma Camp with my helpers.
We have a silk lilac tree out front that is not doing well at all. It will require pruning at some point, but I think it is beyond hope.

We had a row of catalpas at our first house. They had to be trimmed every few years or they got out of control.

ReplyDeleteJenn - it doesn't quite compare, but I pruned my three golden currants this fall for the first time since they were planted four years ago. One I trimmed quite dramatically, one medium and one mildly. A bit of an experiment to see how they respond in the spring!
ReplyDeleteWe lived in a house once where we kept wondering what it was that was making such a loud noise falling on the roof. Catalpa! We never pruned them, but then we didn't own the house ;) They were fascinating trees.
