Book Review: Plastic Island

Plastic Island is a wonderful picture book that tells the story of plastics that are thrown away.

It was Oprah who first made this a mainstream issue on popular television, where I heard about it. Author David Cuellar heard it from a fellow hiker and decided to write a book for young children.

The middle of the Pacific Ocean hold a stationary garbage heap about twice the size of Texas, swirling in a vortex of shameful pollution. It hurts animals, and is caused by humans.

That said, it is a delightful book, which connects the child to the eagle in the sky and the fish in the seas. The illustrations are lovely. I am looking forward to reading it to my grandchildren, although I often wonder if we are preaching to the choir when we talk to young kids. They seem to grasp it well.

  3. Sounds wonderful! It's never too early to teach kids not to litter or to waste and to respect the planet.

  4. I always look at the plastic bags in a supermarket, and wonder how much they contribute to worldwide plastic garbage, as we are such a small population down here. Have you read " The Rosie Project"? by Graeme Simsion...Hope all is OK up North.

  6. We have a huge problem with plastic in the water. They've just passed a bill to ban plastic bags at check out counters in Hawaii.
