It's gotta be spring...Butch raccoon is awake!

Those opposable thumbs get them into trouble! Or fun, depending upon one's point of view! I spotted Butch March 20th. They keep showing up on my motion-sensor trailcam!

"Butch" who was lactating!
We know about Migration. Hibernation, that long winter's nap that bears do.
Brumation is the hibernation-like state that cold-blooded (ectothermic) animals use during very cold weather to conserve energy. Estivators have a sleepy time, depending upon the weather and will wake to eat.

Hubby has this habit of naming the animals, and then ascribing conversations. He began with 'Butch', and then we found it he was a she, as you can see in this photo. She was a character.
They go after anything edible!

    Butch seems very happy at your place. I think one of her relatives lives here ... perhaps I can persuade him/her to go on vacation to visit Butch.

    what a sweet little face, and in the trail-cam, was that dry leaves or crunching snow as she walked away? She seems to be very tame.

    Ooh, Eileen's comment reminded me I didn't feed the birds today. Better get out there, because they get up earlier than I do.
    Yes, "Butch" is definitely a mother. I've always loved the idea of raccoons, washing their food in water, but I really don't have any experience with them. I'd see them here and there when I lived in BC, but we never became friends!

    I came to Google to find a photo of a lactating raccoon to show one of our technicians (we do nuisance wildlife control). What a great photo!! Yours is the best one I was able to find.
