No, not today. Today we were otherwise occupied.
I spotted a wee duck yesterday, herding 4 or 5 ducklings. I believe it is a black duck. I grabbed my camera, and followed.
This little duck was left behind. I watched it peep, run, trying to get up the steep slope, falling until it managed to get a leg up.

Mommy ran like stink with the others, down the hill towards the meadow, and the swamp. It's important not to interfere with nature. This wee one saw me coming and hunkered down. I walked past. I went down to the meadow and couldn't find Mom anywhere. I decided I best leave them all alone.
I prefer to believe that all went well. The cycle of life is a harsh one.

A bug on a gooseberry bush predator, not prey! |
I prefer to think Baby Black Duck was reunited with his family, too, and I know how unwise it is to mess with Mother Nature.
ReplyDeleteI have a feeling I'd have come away from that experience as the mother of a duckling, however, because sometimes I'm not very bright.

ReplyDeleteThis little guy would make it. He can hear the others and will get there.
ReplyDeleteI hope the duckling made it!! I know that predators have to eat, too, but...
ReplyDeleteI love the photos of the twins!! I have never studied a white cat before, so I am fascinated!!
Found some info on the pond puppy, or mud puppy. What a critter!
