The one that got away!

Our backyard bear visitor April, 2013
Travelling about Lanark County yesterday, on a delightful back road that left the car covered in clay/mud, hubby was driving too fast, as always, and I spotted a momma bear and her two cubs galloping into the forest. There was a car behind us, and we couldn't suddenly brake, as I tend to demand. By the time we found a place to stop, they had been long gone into the forest.

What might this be? Pine siskin?
I cannot be greedy! Yes, I have fun photos of a bear cub in our backyard. There are lots of lovely birds about!

Red-winged blackbird on my Catalpa tree.

windy day!

And we spotted a painted turtle on the road. I sent it off into the ditch, in the direction in which it was headed.

  1. Wonderful series of photos. Exciting to see the mama bear and her cubs. I saw one a few weeks back, only the second time in my life that I have seen bears out and about. The last time with the tiny cub was a thrill.

  2. Lovely bird shots! And the bear... I think I'd have a nervous breakdown if I saw a bear in our backyard!

  9. Drives out on back roads always pay dividends. What's a little dust here and there?

  10. I'm thinking the bird might be a female red-wing?

  14. Oh Jenn, I love the windy day bird!
We have red-winged blackbirds here, too. Aren't they lovely?
And I remember your bear picture. Of course you couldn't stop to get new photos under those circumstances, but what fun to see. I'm afraid I always try to stop to get closer looks at bears, which might not be the wisest thing to do.
And I'm glad you saved the turtle on the road. I haven't seen a turtle in the wild for many years.
