The difference between watching a beaver swim and a muskrat- is that you can see the muskrat's snake-like tail as it swims, but not the beaver's.

We've found ourselves staring into murky waters doing the "oh loook, it's a muskrat" "No I think it was a beaver" .... and then they never show up enough to actually recognize the little critters. Now I'll just check out "tail" or "no tail".....
