Fire at Rideau Valley Marketplace, near Smiths Falls

UPDATE: Dec. 12th

Insurance coverage is running out. Water is still not potable. The testing results are NOT available to the residents.
"Gail Read, who owns one of the impacted properties, said that volatile chemicals are probably still present as well but testing results are no longer shared with them. She added that good treatment of these fuel-related substances — strontium, chloroform, benzene, toluene and ethyl acetate — will also be necessary."

Action plans expected next month for Smiths Falls area families dealing with water contamination after fire

Water testing conducted by the province’s Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change confirmed that the presence of benzene, styrene, poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), poly-aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and heavy metals were found in some of the impacted homes.In total, five homes were found to have an exceedance of contaminants above their standards, three homes had detections of, but no exceedances of contaminants and one home had detections of contaminants at very low levels, but no exceedances.

The road was closed for hours. The fire was spotted at 5 a.m., the road wasn't opened again until 2 p.m. Thank goodness for our volunteer firefighters and police.

Fire destroyed a flea market on Highway 43 just outside Smiths Falls.


Highway 43 west of Smiths Falls reopened Sunday evening hours after a massive fire razed a popular flea market in nearby Drummond North Elmsley township.

Early morning fire west of Smiths Falls Chief Saunders also praised the communication between the departments that came together to douse the fire. He also confirmed that no one was hurt, either inside the building or while fighting the blaze. In addition to Fire departments from Smiths Falls and Drummond North Elmsley, Chief Saunders says support was received from Montague, Merrickville, Beckwith, Mississippi Mills, Ocean Wave (Carleton Place) and Perth fire departments.

The folks in this house must have been petrified with fear!

Oh dear; fire is really scary. Thank goodness no casualties.

We are getting our first signs of snow; doesn't really lie here on the coast, but golly the temps have plumetted~! YAM xx
