Critter reports and spring - sort of...

Mother Nature, fickle she be. Only a few days ago the sun was shining. The frog pond is half thawed.

Annabelle and I did some work on the goldfish pond before the Monday snow.  Can you see her? She's quite camouflaged! The goldfish pond is also about half melted, but it doesn't look good.

Rest easy, Geraldine.
About 6 goldfish and several frogs are frozen in the ice.  Geraldine floated up dead, as well. I'm so sad. I've removed 3 goldfish, and three frogs, more are frozen in the large chunk of ice. It stinks to high heaven, I tell ya! It's not a deep pond, 2 - 3', 6' long.

Our bullfrog turned up in 2012, when we thought 'she' was a 'he', and Jesse named her Jeremiah! I weighed her, and she was 469 grams! They reproduced in the frog pond down below.

Daisy is happy with the grass appearing from beneath the snow.

Annabelle likes the flower box, with the fake poinsettias, but she was thrilled with the tree house.

I uncovered the fountain.
Buster wanted to be king of the castle!
Can you see him on the top?

Daisy found a mouse. Annabelle kept getting closer and closer to the action. She's still not a full-fledged member of the tribe. No mice were harmed in the activities. It got away. Typical!
Daisy (middle) found a mouse, but earned the interest of her sisters.

It is nice to see the ice melting.. Hubby cleaned up our pond some, it had a lot of leaves in it.. I love your cute kitties, great shots. Have a happy Tuesday!

Always wanted a frog pond but other projects gobbled my spare time. So I get to enjoy posts of yours while you do all the work. Thanks Jennifer!

I read somewhere years ago, never to break the ice on a fish pond, the sound waves will stun and kill the goldfish. We have had ice on ours only ONCE, in 14 years, and there were no fish in it then. Pity about yours dying, Jennifer, but life goes on, as the mice escape.

Cute shots of Daisy.

it's always a wonder as to how creatures survive in different situations. there are winners and losers. It's disappointing to find the losers.

Oh no not Geraldine! Well she had a fine time for the past few in your back yard waterhole! Annabelle is looking so much settled; can't help thinking she arrived at about the right time... the revolving door of nature. YAM xx

glad to see you had plenty of helpers or should that be supervisors?

The cats seem pleased to see spring. Annabelle walking on the rocks reminds me of my parents' last set of cats, who would do the same walking on a rock wall on the property.

There has been a lot of winter kill in frog ponds across the province. They debate is oxygen deprivation or freezing. As I believe, last year, we had a thaw mid-winter. Not this year. We have plenty of frogs in the frog pond below and I do not worry about the species. I'm thinking on installing a bubbler, or draining the pond in late fall, after I bring in the goldfish.. We shall see.
